Moonstar sat just outside of her den. She calmly watched the warriors and apprentices walk to their dens and fall asleep. She was tired, too, getting up early for the dawn patrol and going on a late hunting party. The stressed leader slunk inside of her den as soon as the clearing was empty. 'Another dawn patrol, tomorrow. I'd better get some sleep. Moonstar tested her moss bed a little before jumping in and curling up. She stayed awake a little while, listening to the gurgling river. The black-and-white cat fell asleep soon with the river noises echoing in her ears.
Wait, it wasn't an echo! There was a babbling brook nearby and reeds were tickling her nose. There was a sweet smell in the air, like after a forest rain, only now there was a trail of it. She 'tasted' the air and began following the scent.
As she walked, the reeds grew fewer. She finally stumbled upon a beautiful lake. It sparkled, reflecting the stars. "Wow," Moonstar breathed as she got a closer look.
When she peered into the water, it reflected, not only her, another cat. It was a tom with long dark-brown fur and piercing yellow eyes that glimmered with starlight. "Are you impressed?" He questioned.
"Very! Where am I and who are you?" She somehow felt safe around this cat. She turned to look at him, but he was nowhere to be seen. She looked into the water, but his reflection was still there. "Starclan," She whispered.
"I am Bearfur, and this is not Starclan's hunting grounds. The Forgotten keep to their own skies."
"But why can I only see your reflection?" Moonstar had so many questions, and Bearfur knew.
Bearfur sighed, almost jokingly, then scolded, "I will answer this last one, but no more. I became what my heart was. I am now the great lake that stretches before you. I believe I am the only Forgotten that got the privilege of becoming his heart's desire. Now I must tell you something."
"I knew you'd say that..." Moonstar grimly replied.
Bearfur's voice became cold and it echoed around her. "A hideous thing is coming. The thing that killed us has decided to finish the job. The clans must unite or perish. Those who run will perish. There will be much loss. Keep your paws on one path. If one of the new Forgotten falls, I fear for us all! Do not fight to avenge the Forgotten! Fight to protect the future!" Bearfur was beginning to fade, "If you need guidance, look to the water!" He parted with the words that started the clans, "Unite or die!"
"Wait! Don't go!" Moonstar leapt out of her bed, the air seemed to be whispering something.
"Look to the water, young leader. I will be with you in times of great danger or confusion. Look to the water!"
