Meltingsnow stood, looking over the river. There was no movement on the Thunderclan side. It's not that she was waiting for them, because she wasn't, she was hunting, but she wanted peace. Her eyes returned to the river. No fish were in sight. Odd. It was greenleaf, why were their no fish? Must just be the time of day. She thought to herself. Oh well. She started to walk up stream, as she went she was thinking about the recent battle with Windclan and Shadowclan, It was only a few moons ago, so tensions were still high at gatherings. Just then she saw a flash of gray in the water. Meltingsnow whipped around and her paw dipped into the water. She scooped out the fish and quickly killed it. Finally! She continued down stream knowing thats were the fish would be.

Moonstar heard her deputy before she saw her. The sound of a flopping fish told her that Meltingsnow was nearby. She opened her mouth wide and collected some air on her tounge, pressing it to the roof of her mouth and up towards her 'scenting' glands. Yep, there was Meltingsnow. She couldn't identify any others. It was probably because of the fish that was at her deputy's paws. Moonstar gladly searched the river for any prey. Truth be told, she had been out for some quiet but she wouldn't mind some friendly chat.
A silver-green shape was moving towards her. She quickly extended her foreleg and flashed out her claws. The fish's scales broke as Moonstar cupped her paw and tore it from the water. The fish was about three mouse-lengths long and had a large fin-like crest along it's back. A bluegill. "Well, one for the warriors!" She watched it miserably flop about before swiftly biting the spine and head. "What'd you catch?" The black she-cat called to Meltingsnow.

Meltingsnow's head flicked up for a second to see her leader, then she went back to looking for fish. "A trout, I think." Meltingsnow had never really taken notice to what types of fish she caught. Her eyes penetrated the water, searching. A flash of red alerted her. Her front paw plunged into the water. When she felt her claws scrape against scales she gripped the fish with her claws and pulled it on to the rocks, were she quickly killed it. Meltingsnow remember something, without moving her eyes from the water she asked, "I've noticed that you have been acting strange lately. Why is that? Can you tell me?" She finally looked up at her leader. Moonstar stool next to her fish just a few tail lengths away.

Moonstar's eyes flashed for a second. She settled down fast, then meowed, "Strangely? Have I?" She stared into the river and saw a reflection of brown fur in the swiftly-moving current. She dismissed the thought of the Forgotten and waited for a fish to swim down near her. Something new caught her eye and she flashed her paw down into the abyss. She pulled out no scales, but a lump of fur! The frightened thing squealed and ran off, attempting to get away.
But Moonstar was fast! She rushed in front of the animal and sunk her teeth into it. The water in it's fur was all she could taste at first, then the sickly-sweet taste of blood danced in her mouth. She dropped it, then remembered that she had nothing but fish in a while. She snapped the creature's spine and placed it on the ground. It was a large water rat. She proudly buried it. The leader looked back up at her deputy and grinned. "Haven't caught one of those in a while! And there's no smell of disease on it!"

Meltingsnow could tell that her leader was hiding somthing from her, but she knew better then to press. She watched as Moonstar's paw shot into the water and retreived a water rat. Meltingsnow looked at the limp rat. "Haven't caught one of those in a while! And there's no smell of disease on it!" Moonstar exclaimed. Meltingsnow agreed. "I've noticed something else to. Down stream a bit there was no fish. It might have just been the time of day but.... Is that what your dream was about?" Meltingsnow blurtted out the last part. "You don't have to tell me." She amended quickly. She didn't need her leader to be mad at her.

"What?" Moonstar said very fast, "What dream? I never said anything about a dream! You must've eaten a bad fish. And as for downstream, I'll check it out later," the she-cat glanced over at a small pond that was left behind from the last flood. She watched the pond skaters make ripples along the water's surface. Her thoughts trailed off... How did Meltingsnow find out about the dream? She kept it between herself and the medicine cat.
She quickly turned back to the river. There was the reflection of Bearfur staring at her with his friendly eyes. He whispered into Moonstar's reflection's ear and she heard it just as if he was whispering in her real ear, "Your mind is like that pond,"
"It has bugs in it?" She joked, but then a tiny fish broke the surface and his reflection faded. "Chikushou!" Moonstreak breathed. She flashed her paw in and missed the fish miserably. The swing upset her balance and she tumbled headfirst into the river. She watched the fish swim away with the current as her head broke the surface. Disorderly, she swam towards the shore... Make that the Thunderclan shore.

Meltingsnow listened to Moonstar's quick reply. She could detect hints of nerousness. But, she didn't press this time. Moonstar had wadded alittle farther into the river in an attempt to catch a fish. She missed. Meltingsnoe was about to say that the fish deeper in the river were harder to catch, but Moonstar started to swim towards the Thunderclan side. "Moonstar! Were are you going." She lowered her voice in case a Thunderclan cat was nearby. "Moonstar, get back over here." Meltingsnow didn't like how she had said the words. Moonstar as her leader and she didn't need to take orders from her deputy.

Moonstar shook her head to clear her thoughts. What was going on? She turned around and swam back to the RiverClan side of the lake. "S-sorry. I think my head just got jumbled up with the smells around here. I practically didn't know which way was up!" Moonstar giggled, trying to put some humor in this conversation. She had heard her deputy giving her an order. Many leaders in the past would get angry, instead she smiled. One day Meltingsnow would make a great leader! As she got out, she glanced over at Sunningrocks, wondering if they could-er-would swim over there. Embarrasment pricked at her pelt. She'd probably scared off all the prey from here to the falls! She lay down beside her deputy and watched the swift current.
The sun shone brightly overhead. A sparrow landed near the river and picked at the ground. A breeze picked up and ruffled the cats' fur. At least no ThundrClan patrol had seen them!

Meltingsnow watched her leader. She was worring her. What was wrong? Why was she acting so strange. Was there really a dream? These qustion swirled around in her head. She couldn't help but laugh at what Moonstar said. True, sometimes Meltingsnow didn't know up from down, but that was no excuse for swimming toward Thunderclan. "It's been good talking with you Moonstar. We havn't had any one on one time for a while. The clans don't seem to be themselves lately...." Meltingsnow looked into the swirling water of the river as she spoke. Life was difficult.

Moonstar nodded laughed along with her deputy, mostly at her own foolishness. She stopped laughing and purred, "Yeah! We haven't, have we?" The leader began to sniff around at the fish she had caught earlier. It made her stomach gurgle. These past months had been so exciting and dangerous that she never had time to relax! She looked over at Meltingsnow. This is not the time to show weakness! Keep hunting! The cat dropped down her front paws in a long stretch.
Moonstar couldn't go back to camp for a while, her fur was still soaked, but at least her short fur dried up quickly. She flattened her ears as she meowed, "What am I going to do for the next gathering? The WindClan and ShadowClan leaders probably hate me and Howlstar. I also couldn't announce the prey shortage we had when the river was frozen over. Howlstar would probably understand, but Angelstar and Chaosstar? Probably not. Should I just lie?"

Meltingsnow thought for a minute, "No, you should not lie. But don't make it totally obvious. Just say something like Riverclan have been well." Meltingsnow thought, "I don't understand why Anglestar would lead a attack with Shadowclan, though. She has always seem compassionate. And to fight with Shadowclan, that has to have an affect on her pride. So that would mean Windclan is suffering, too, along with Shadowclan. Thunderclan... I wouldn't know...." She concluded. The only reason two clans would fight together is when times are hard. And then, what most cats should realize is fighting will make it worse. That there is four clans so that the clans can help each other, not unite against each other. But Meltingsnow kept these thoughts to herself. Some cat would think these thoughts traitorous.

"True. I guess I should just keep it short and sweet!" Moonstar felt hot with embarassment for thinking of stuff like lies. Meltingsnow had made a point, though! She swiped her tounge on her paw and proceded to wash her face. Moonstar stretched her back legs, then she got back on all her paws and meowed, "You won't tell the clan about this, right? They wouldn't approve of me being so...clumsy...especially because of where I come from. I'm gonna go and take a walk. I'll come back for my prey later," She began to walk towards the bridge. Fourtrees was always a great place to clear her thoughts.

Meltingsnow watched her leader depart towards Fortrees. She had seemed so jittery lately, and she had reacted when Meltingsnow had jumped to the conclusion that she had had a weird dream. Meltingsnow gathered her fish. She sat, with the fish dangling from her jaws, staring into the river. The current seemed to quicken. Above her there was a large crackle as thunder boomed in the sky. Something was wrong. Meltingsnow did get the usual feeling of sucurity that she got staring into the river. She felt weak and unprotect. Yes. Something is very wrong. As she turned to flee from the rain she thought she say a pair of eyes on the Thunderclan side of the river. Whipping around she glanced wildly around, but saw nothing of the yellow eyes that had glared in hatred. She turned and headed back to the safty of her camp, hoping she would still feel safe there.
